Overview of 2009 Summit
Sessions, designed for teachers, administrators, and specialists, will highlight best practices for benchmark, strategic and intensive interventions, content area literacy, and closing the achievement gap for English learners and special needs students. School panels will present sessions on improving school-wide literacy. The Summit will also include a Publishers’ Fair featuring the SBE-adopted English/language arts instructional materials.
Participants
Participants will have time to reflect and learn how California schools address national and state mandates for secondary student literacy. Keynote speakers, presenters, workshops, and school panels will focus on reading, academic vocabulary, comprehension, writing, and school-wide literacy. Instructional strategies for teacher use will address struggling students, English learners, and special needs students. School presentations will feature secondary school teams who are successfully improving student literacy.
The Summit will focus on one or more of the following session workshops:
- Intensive Intervention Sessions
Designed for teachers and administrators who work with secondary students that qualify for placement in the state-adopted intensive reading intervention programs. Presenters will focus on the implementation of the adopted intervention programs, highlighting effective strategies to accelerate student growth and ensure a smooth, coherent transition to the grade level reading/language arts program.
- Strategic Intervention Sessions
Designed for teachers and administrators who work with secondary students who are performing below grade level standards and who qualify for placement in the core reading program. These students need an additional support period to be successful. Presenters will focus on the content of the strategic support period.
- Benchmark Sessions
Designed for teachers and administrators who work with students who are satisfactorily achieving grade-level standards and who qualify for placement in the core but on occasion may require additional assistance and support for specific standards and concepts. These students may benefit from ancillary materials, tutoring, software assistance, additional time with the teacher, and differentiated instruction. Without this support they could fall behind and fail to score at the proficient level on statewide tests.
- Advanced Sessions
Designed for teachers and administrators who work with students who are achieving above their grade-level standards. This strand includes honors courses, Advanced Placement, and English elective courses.
- Across the Content Areas Sessions
Designed for teachers working with students in all content areas. Content area teachers play a critical role in supporting and sustaining school-wide literacy implementation that ensures all students are able to learn and read content area text, as well as understand essential vocabulary.
- Literacy Leadership Sessions
Designed to assist administrators and teacher leaders to focus on the critical role that leadership plays in the implementation of school-wide literacy systems. Back to Top
